Tijdens de bezetting zetten Willem en Anna Bendeler zich in Den Haag in voor het onderbrengen van Joden. Hiervoor ontvangen ze in 1979 de Israëlische Yad Vashem onderscheiding. Hieronder een citaat uit de toelichting bij het toekennen van deze onderscheiding:
“Willem and Anneke saw how badly the Jewish immigrants from Germany and the non-Jewish opponents of the Nazi regime living in Holland were being treated. They tried to help and shelter as many people as possible, including Hans and Jeanette Jacoby, who stayed with the Bendelers from August 18, 1942, the day after their call-up for deportation, until December, when Willem was put on the Gestapo’s wanted list and it became too dangerous for them. […]
Willem was arrested in August 1943 and sent to the Vught concentration camp in December of that year. On November 29, 1979, Yad Vashem recognized Willem Gerrit Bendeler and his wife, Anna Willemina Jacoba Bendeler-Schnetz […] as Righteous Among the Nations”
